How Voice Search May Impact Your Business
With so much focus on mobile search, many webmasters have overlooked something else that is affecting SEO: voice search. According to Google, more searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries, including the U.S. and Japan.
Also, the number of people who own smartphones continues to increase, which means that people will be using these devices in different ways that marketers will have to account for.
Voice Search: The “New” Search
Talking into the phone is a lot easier than typing. According to a study from Northstar Research, 55 percent of teenagers say they are using voice search every day, and 56 percent of adults use it. Why type into a phone when you can just ask Siri or Cortana a question?
Research shows that Google can provide direct answers to questions in nearly 20 percent of search queries. This number continues to go up, so we can only anticipate that Google will get better at it, not worse. When you consider that just a couple of short years ago, Google Answers was yet to be seen in the search engines, you get an idea of just how fast this is moving along.
Is This the End of Web Pages?
What does voice search mean for your business? If Google can provide direct answers to people’s questions, will there be a need for web pages anymore?
You can take a deep breath – at least for now – because web pages won’t be disappearing anytime soon. Sure, it is convenient to ask a question and get a direct answer, but many topics need research, facts and examples. People turn to websites for education and information, and that is something that can’t be provided in a simple one-sentence answer.
That said, you do need to prepare your website for voice search. As more people use this feature on their smartphones, it will become important for your website to be voice search friendly.
Making Your Site Voice Search Friendly
Let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can prepare yourself for the future.
- Implement long tail keywords
- Address who, what, where, when and how questions that your customers are asking
- Write in a natural, conversationalist voice
- Write in the language used by your customers
At this time, Google is not penalizing websites that are not voice search friendly. But, websites that are implementing these strategies are coming out ahead.
