New Year, New Ideas. Tips for Coming Up with Fresh Content Ideas

One of the most difficult parts of creating a post for your company blog is coming up with fresh ideas. This becomes even harder once you’ve already run through the standard how-to posts, top 10s and trends for the month. One approach that has been helpful is using common customer questions as the basis for content. For example, if your company sells designer purses and customers commonly ask how to clean the purses, you could create a post about this. But even this approach only gets you so far.

It’s a new year, and content marketing is continuing to emerge in both quality and quantity. So how can you come up with fresh, interesting ideas for your content that will have people coming back for more?

The first thing to do is start an idea file. It doesn’t matter how you do it; choose a system that works for you. You can jot down ideas in your notebook, bookmark sites under “Content Ideas” or use a program like Evernote where you can instantly clip web articles. When you’re doing your own research or simply reading blogs on your own time, you’ll come across plenty of ideas that can be expanded upon.

Now, let’s move on to how to find topics for content.

Social Media

One of the first places to go for topic generation is social media. Active conversations are constantly taking place on social media, so you can get a good feel for what people are interested in, what’s driving discussions and how your followers feel about particular topics. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn Groups, etc. are great channels to be active in. You’d be surprised by how many things people are interested in, but the information is still lacking.

Other Bloggers

Another source of information is other bloggers. It’s a good idea to follow some of your favorite blogs from related industries so that you’re constantly being inspired on new topics. It’s also a good idea to follow blogs that are general in nature. Your purse company, for instance, would benefit from following widespread blogs like bagbliss.com and purseblog.com. These sites offer a wide range of information and reviews on designer purses. You could then use the unbiased content to compare products and upsell features.

Current News/Trending Topics

Your blog should follow a consistent theme, and you should steer clear of taking firm sides when it comes to sensitive topics like religion or politics. But you can still use trending topics and current news affairs to stimulate your own content. If you read an article about fur-free designers and brands, you could craft a blog post about why it’s important to choose brands that make their products (like your purses) humanely.

Your Readers

When you’re stuck on content, turn to your biggest influencers: your readers. Ask followers on social media what they would like to learn more about, or what types of posts inspire them. Ask questions at the bottom of the blog to generate discussions at the end of your blog posts. Send out a survey in your monthly email newsletter asking readers to rate what’s important to them. These are just a few ideas to help you gather more content that people will be excited to read!
