Keeping Readers Glued to Your Content
It’s not easy to keep readers on your page. You can easily pour hours of research and witty writing into a blog post, but if it’s not compelling to your readers, they probably won’t stay. How can you make sure that the time you put into your content is actually worth it? The key is creating content that is interesting, engaging, unique AND written in a way that is captivating and magnetic. In other words, it’s having a way with words that draws people in.
Here are some tips for keeping readers glued to your content.
Hook Them Right Away
It helps to hook readers in right away. That’s why your first sentence should be bold, interesting or even controversial. Ideas include an eye-opening statistic, bold statement, interesting fact or engaging question. This gets the reader thinking right away and interested in learning more.
Make Paragraphs Easy to Scan
Readers get overwhelmed when you throw a lot at them. Instead, write in short sentences and paragraphs. It may look a little silly at first, but that’s okay. People find it easier to read through content when it’s broken up. Don’t be afraid to be witty, either. Content is always more interesting when you talk in a friendly tone rather than a preachy one.
Know Your Audience
Your content should be written in a way that’s like talking to a friend. The thing is, you know your friend. Do you know your audience in the same way? You should. In order to produce content that people want to read, you need to know what they want. Define your key persona and imagine writing to this one person. Ask questions. Use “you” to make it feel personal. Give examples. Know when to be funny, serious, sarcastic, etc.
Tell a Story
Another way to grab attention is by telling a story. People tend to get intrigued right away when a story is told. They identify with the character and want to know what happens. Stories also lighten moods and make the content feel relatable. Work stories and real-life examples into your content so that it feels real, enjoyable and fun.
Be Fluid and Direct
Long content is ideal, but you don’t want to pack in a bunch of fluff just to fill things out. When you choose topics that you’re passionate and knowledgeable about, you won’t have to search for things to write. Be clear and direct; don’t beat around the bush. Also, don’t jump around in the things you say. That will only confuse readers. Stick to one thing at a time and present your content in a cohesive manner from start to finish.
