Ford’s New Virtual Reality App Gives Racing Fans An Inside Look At The World of Motorsports

VR App Uses Storytelling to the World of Racing

Las Vegas November 17th, 2016 – Fans of Ford Motorsports now have a new way to follow their favorite supercars around the U.S. racing circuit.

Ford recently launched a new virtual reality app for iOS and Android users that provides unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to stories about the people, products and innovations making Ford Motorsports a worldwide leader in stock car racing, drag racing, rally cross, off-road racing, formula drift and more.

While Ford isn’t the first automaker to leverage the power of virtual reality (VR) to showcase its products (for example, some companies have begun using VR to offer “test drive” experiences to consumers), it may be the first to shift into high gear by using storytelling to allow consumers to interact with the brand.

The first such VR story is a behind-the-scenes look at 24 Hours of Le Mans, the legendary sports car race lasting an entire day and takes drivers and their cars across France. This year’s winner, Joey Hand, drove a Ford-sponsored GT racecar to victory. Ford’s VR app puts users in the virtual driver’s seat as the sports car wheels its way through France to victory.

But the app isn’t only about watching the countryside go by while swerving in and out of traffic. It’s about storytelling, and that’s what differentiates it from other VR driving apps in the industry.

Ford actually tapped Hand to narrate the story of how he led Ford to victory in the world’s most prestigious automotive endurance challenge. Users of the app get turn-by-turn commentary of some of the most exciting moments of the race–from the poll to the passing to what it feels like to lead the pack at the finish line.

The app truly delivers a user experience unlike anything else in the industry, according to Adweek, a publication that has covered the industry trend of using VR to promote products.

According to Adweek, virtual reality makes “a lot of sense for auto brands–after all, what better way to show off your car’s features than to put consumers in the virtual driver’s seat?”

And while it’s true users will learn a lot about Ford’s products by using the VR app, they are also likely to be entertained and engaged, according to Adweek.

Ford “took its virtual reality experience to the next level with its new VR app,” the publication wrote, by letting users “immerse themselves in stories related to the brand.”

So far, the app’s first story has received rave reviews from consumers and media alike. Next up will be stories about the studios and labs where the company creates its cutting-edge technology, new product innovations and maybe even a feature about its driverless car for ride-sharing services, which is currently in development and scheduled to launch in 2021.

At the end of the day, the new app and its stories are all about providing Ford fans unprecedented access to the people, products and innovations that have made Ford one of the most popular brands in America.
